Join the Fight: Help End the Cage Age and Live Exports

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) has released Issue 214 of its flagship magazine Farm Animal Voice (Summer 2025).

This powerful 28-page call-to-action celebrates recent victories while sounding the alarm on the ongoing crises caused by industrial farming. With a striking black-and-white close-up of a pig on the cover and the bold slogan “Help us to rewrite their story,” the issue combines hard-hitting exposés, global campaign updates, and personal supporter stories to rally readers behind the fight to End the Cage Age, stop live exports, and transform food systems worldwide.

Global CEO Philip Lymbery’s opening message is unequivocal: “Whilst we see progress being made, we know there is more to be done.” He credits supporters’ petitions, compassionate shopping choices, and social media advocacy for driving change, stressing that “every action you take really matters.”

Key victories highlighted include:

  • A landmark December 2024 UK Court of Appeal ruling that animals must not be bred to suffer – a case brought by The Humane League that effectively bans extreme “Frankenchicken” breeds and puts new pressure on retailers to adopt the Better Chicken Commitment.
  • Malgorzata Szadkowska, head of CIWF Poland, named “Woman of the Year 2024” by Forbes Women Poland for her work exposing factory farming’s cruelty, environmental damage, and public-health risks.
  • The 2025 Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW) showing UK companies leading the world: M&S, Greggs, Premier Foods, and others achieved top-tier rankings, with 14 firms improving their “Impact Rating” by moving to cage-free eggs and reducing tail docking in pigs.
  • Lord Goldsmith honoured with the first-ever Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare and Environmental Protection for his role in the 2022 UN resolution linking animal welfare to biodiversity, climate, and pandemic prevention.

Major campaigns in focus:

  • END.IT – CIWF’s global petition to end factory farming is “tantalisingly close” to one million signatures and will be presented to world leaders at the UN General Assembly in September 2025.
  • End the Cage Age – UK – Ongoing pressure on the new Labour government to deliver its manifesto pledge to phase out cages for laying hens and pigs.
  • Live Exports – Cruelty at Sea – Renewed calls for Europe to finally ban long-distance live transport after decades of broken promises.
  • Stop Cruel Imports – A new report with Animal Policy International and the RSPCA warns that post-Brexit trade deals with the US and India threaten to flood Britain with lower-welfare meat produced using sow stalls, battery cages, growth promoters, and chlorine washing – all currently illegal in the UK.
  • Honest Labelling – Street surveys showing shoppers are shocked to discover how pigs and chickens are really kept, reinforcing demands for method-of-production labelling on all meat and dairy.

The magazine also previews CIWF’s major 2025 international engagements: the UN Food Systems Summit stocktake in Ethiopia (July), presentation of the END.IT petition in New York (September), and a strong presence at COP30 in Brazil (November), where the charity will push delegates to recognise industrial livestock’s massive climate impact.

Supporter stories feature legacy giver Adrian, TV presenter Sharon Carpenter (interviewed on raising U.S. awareness), and celebrity endorsements from Miriam Margolyes, Chris Packham, and others.

In a stark warning linking animal welfare to public health, the issue notes that overcrowded cage systems are accelerating bird-flu mutation and spillover risks, with over 10 million birds culled in the UK’s worst-ever outbreaks continuing into 2025.

Farm Animal Voice Issue 214 leaves readers with a clear message: the era of factory farming must end now – for the animals, for human health, for the planet, and for future generations. The charity urges everyone to sign the END.IT petition at ciwf.org.uk/petition-endit while there is still time to reach one million voices before the UN presentation.
