At Grosmont Station, nestled deep in the rolling heather of the North Yorkshire Moors, tradition purrs along the tracks just as surely as the heritage steam trains that draw thousands of visitors each year. For as long as anyone can remember, cats have been part of the station’s unofficial workforce, keeping the rodent population in check among its sheds, storerooms, and Victorian nooks.
When the line’s previous mouser passed away, staff expected to recruit again — until fate intervened. A trio of black stray kittens, once sleeping rough near the tracks, were discovered and swiftly drafted into service. Now christened Titch, Clinker, and Ash, they are learning the ropes in both pest control and public relations.

“They’re still in training,” laughed Simon Wall, Grosmont Station’s shop supervisor. “Right now, it’s acorns, each other, or anything that moves. But the instincts are there — and they’re already proving themselves a real asset.”
The kittens, “black as shadows and cute as buttons,” spend their mornings practising ambush manoeuvres before collapsing into play-fights that delight visitors. In between the serious business of mousing, they charm tourists who travel the historic line that winds through Britain’s oldest national park.
“We’ve always had shed cats for many, many years, and they all do a great job,” Wall told the reporters. “They’re there on a night, and always waiting for me in the morning for breakfast. The public absolutely loves them — and it’s nice we have friendly ones this time.”
Off duty, the furry trio retire to their own “cat house” — a snug retreat equipped with warm beds, a space heater, and a wall of honors celebrating generations of past mousers. The railway’s feline service members are not forgotten; their work is marked and remembered as part of the living heritage of Grosmont.
For Titch, Ash, and Clinker, the future looks long, fun, and fruitful. Once feral, now cherished, these kittens have found a permanent role on one of Britain’s most beloved heritage railways — ensuring the line runs not only with steam and steel, but with a steady heartbeat of whiskers and purrs.
