What began quietly in May 2023 as a targeted intelligence-gathering exercise has exploded into one of the most sweeping organised crime crackdowns in modern Scottish policing.
Dateline: Glasgow — Dubbed Operation Intensity, the year-long investigation by Police Scotland has smashed a well-resourced organised crime group (OCG) operating from Argyll to Tayside—pulling down its command structure, seizing vast amounts of drugs, and rescuing vulnerable children from its grip.

The Haul That Shook the Underworld
Over the course of the operation, officers from the Organised Crime and Counter-Terrorism Unit, working alongside local divisions, executed 46 search warrants across urban centres, rural strongholds, and safe houses hidden in plain sight.

The result was staggering:
- Around 100 arrests
- Over 200 kilograms of illegal drugs—including cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, pills, and herbal cannabis
- More than £600,000 in cash recovered
- Three firearms taken off the streets: a handgun, an air weapon, and a BB gun—along with ammunition
The gang identified eleven children at risk of exploitation and safeguarded them, either by referring them to partner agencies or returning them to trusted family members.
The Gang’s Modus Operandi
Police intelligence uncovered an OCG that was highly organised and cynically exploitative. The network relied on couriers—often using ordinary cars to blend into traffic—to operate “dealing lines” that stretched into some of Scotland’s most deprived communities. Safe houses served as resupply hubs, keeping the flow of drugs constant.
Detectives believe the gang systematically targeted vulnerable individuals, coercing them into service while profiting from misery and addiction.

A National Effort with Local Knowledge
“This operation is a clear example of how we use our national resources, alongside the knowledge of our local policing teams, to bring down large gangs operating across the country,” said Detective Superintendent Stevie Elliot, who oversaw the investigation.
“Our strategy was maximising the safety of the public and protecting vulnerable people, particularly children and young people who are all too often coerced and groomed by County Lines drug dealers. Organised criminal gangs show no shame or remorse for their actions and all their activities are focused on profiting from exploitation.”
Elliot emphasised that tackling Scotland’s OCGs remains central to the Serious Organised Crime Taskforce, a multi-agency alliance between Police Scotland, government bodies, and partner agencies.
Communities Called to Action
While Operation Intensity is being hailed as a decisive blow, police stress that lasting success depends on public cooperation.
“We cannot do this alone,” Elliot added. “I would urge anyone with information or concerns about drugs or organised activities to contact Police Scotland on 101, or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
The Wider Context
Operation Intensity is part of a broader UK-wide law enforcement push against OCGs exploiting the County Lines model, where gangs extend their reach beyond city boundaries into smaller towns and rural areas. In Scotland, the approach has been particularly effective when national intelligence capabilities are fused with hyper-local community knowledge—a formula that, in this case, has brought down one of the nation’s most active and dangerous drug networks.
Bottom line: This was not just a police raid—it was the dismantling of a criminal economy, the freeing of children from exploitation, and a message to Scotland’s underworld: your time is running out.
