POWERCUTS HIT SPAIN AND PORTUGAL

Spain and Portugal have experienced a widespread power outage, with parts of France also affected. Cities like Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, and Valencia have been left without internet and electricity, causing travel chaos at their airports. Madrid’s underground network has been evacuated, and traffic lights are not working in the city. Spain’s electricity grid operator, Red Electrica, has confirmed the power outages and is working on reestablishing connections in phases.

The Madrid Tennis Open Tournament was affected by the loss in power.

The Madrid Open was forced to suspend play after the power outage affected the tennis tournament. Scoreboards went dark and overhead cameras lost power, causing light and toilet issues at the tournament. Flight chaos has been widespread, particularly at Lisbon and Madrid, with over 500 flights due to operate from UK airports to Spain and Portugal today.

Lisbon has seen dozens of flights cancelled, while British Airways grounded at least one round trip from London Heathrow. Madrid is also severely affected, with many cancellations of flights with Spain and to/from Portugal. If power is not fully restored, there could be problems with normal overnight departures from Madrid and Lisbon to Latin America.

Madrid was put into total electrical outage and many events were held in the darkness many people in Portugal and Spain have been left disoriented by the power cuts.

International flights in Barcelona are delayed by one to two hours, while many domestic flights are grounded. The Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores are not affected.
