Caracas, Venezuela – Two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday evening, June 24, causing significant damage in and around the capital city of Caracas and prompting a national state of emergency.
The seismic events, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, occurred in quick succession and have resulted in confirmed casualties, with fears that the toll will rise substantially as rescue operations continue.
Earthquake Details
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake struck at approximately 6:04 p.m. local time with an epicenter near Morón, about 160–168 kilometers west of Caracas. Its depth was approximately 22 kilometers. Just 39 seconds later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude mainshock followed, with its epicenter located approximately 16 kilometers southwest of Morón at a shallower depth of around 10 kilometers.
The back-to-back tremors caused buildings to collapse in Caracas and surrounding areas, including the states of La Guaira, Carabobo, Miranda, and others. Damage included collapsed multi-story structures and impacts at locations such as Simón Bolívar International Airport.
Casualties and Impact
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez reported that at least 32 people have been killed and more than 700 injured as of Thursday morning. Rescue teams are actively searching through rubble for survivors, with additional reports of missing individuals in affected regions. The USGS has warned of potentially high casualties and extensive damage, with predictive models indicating the death toll could reach into the thousands.
