The Met Office has issued a rare amber weather warning as severe thunderstorms are expected to lash southern England early Saturday morning, with officials warning of life-threatening flash floods, widespread disruption, and structural damage.

The Met Office has issued a rare amber weather warning as severe thunderstorms are expected to lash southern England early Saturday morning, with officials warning of life-threatening flash floods, widespread disruption, and structural damage.

The amber alert is in effect from 4am to 11am, covering a broad stretch of the south, including London, Brighton, Portsmouth, Chelmsford, St Albans, and Cambridge.

Forecasters have urged the public to prepare for intense downpours, lightning, large hail, and strong winds, warning that flooding of homes, roads, and businesses could happen within minutes. Isolated rural communities risk being completely cut off, while emergency services are braced for travel chaos and power outages.

“This is a serious weather event,” said Jason Kelly, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office. “Within a warm and humid air mass, temperatures could hit 30°C or higher in eastern England, creating perfect conditions for explosive thunderstorm development.”

Disruption Spreads Nationwide

Alongside the amber alert, multiple yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms are in place across England and Scotland. On Friday, yellow warnings were issued for Yorkshire and the Northeast from 11am to 8pm, and later for London and the Southeast between 9pm and 11:49pm.

On Saturday, a wider yellow warning spans most of England from midnight to 9pm. Eastern Scotland faces its own storm alert from 4pm Saturday through midday Sunday.

Another yellow warning will take effect across the South West at midday Sunday, continuing until 3am Monday.

The Deluge Behind the Drought

Ironically, the expected storms come amid intensifying drought conditions. Southern Water has announced the latest hosepipe ban, affecting homes in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight from Monday. Residents will be prohibited from using hosepipes to water gardens, fill paddling pools, or wash vehicles.

The restriction follows a prolonged dry spell, which saw rainfall drop 20% below average in June—officially the hottest on record for England. Two successive heatwaves have pushed demand for water to critical levels, with the East and West Midlands now officially classified as in drought.

Looking Ahead: More Unsettled Weather

Forecasters say the turbulent weather pattern will likely continue until next week. While brief drier and sunnier intervals are expected, showers and thunderstorms will remain a threat, particularly in Temperatures are forecast to remain near or slightly above average, particularly where sunshine breaks through.

“We may see some stabilisation in the west midweek,” said Kelly, “but don’t pack away the umbrellas just yet.”

With already stressed infrastructure and a volatile forecast, authorities are urging residents to take the warnings seriously, especially in flood-prone or exposed areas. The Met Office advises keeping emergency kits at hand, avoiding non-essential travel during amber periods, and checking weather updates regularly.

What to Expect During the Amber Warning (4am–11am Saturday):
