Professor Nasir Ahmed is a softly spoken Indian-American engineer. He was born in Bangalore in 1940. He might just be one of the most important figures in the digital revolution. There, he earned both his master’s and Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. At the university, he served as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2001 after an 18-year tenure.
In the 1970s, he developed the DCT with a team of researchers. This was a groundbreaking compression method. It reduces redundant data while preserving image and sound quality. His theoretical insights were instrumental in creating practical standards. These include JPEG for images and MPEG for video. They form the backbone of modern digital media.
Celebrated, Yet Humble

In 2020, the hit U.S. drama This Is Us aired an emotional episode. It was inspired by his work. The episode cast a spotlight on his groundbreaking achievements and personal life. Viewers were moved as they saw Nasir and his wife, Esther, celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary. They did this via a Zoom call, a piece of technology directly descended from his own inventions.
“It was a beautiful and surreal moment,” Ahmed told reporters in a recent interview. “To see something you helped create being used to connect you with your family—that’s the real reward.”
The Praise of Giants
Today, Ahmed’s influence is quietly celebrated by industry leaders and tech visionaries.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, once remarked, “Without Nasir Ahmed’s DCT, we wouldn’t have efficient search indexing for multimedia. We wouldn’t have YouTube as we know it.”
Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder, credited DCT as “the unseen engine of the streaming revolution.”
Marc Andreessen is the co-creator of the first web browser, Mosaic. He has called Ahmed’s contribution “a core part of the digital economy’s invisible scaffolding.”
And yet, for all this admiration, Ahmed remains grounded. Now in his 80s, he spends his time mentoring young engineers. He shares his story with students. Occasionally, he chats to journalists and documentary crews who’ve recently discovered the giant in their midst.
