Peterborough’s ‘Safer Off the Streets’ Housing Scheme Earns Praise from Resident
A new housing project in Peterborough aimed at supporting homeless people with complex needs has received heartfelt praise from one of its earliest residents.
Off the Streets Accommodation, based on Eastfield Road, provides housing for up to 17 individuals for whom traditional options like hotels or B&Bs aren’t suitable. Since opening its doors in April, it has already offered temporary refuge to eight people.

Among them is Paul, who has battled addiction and mental health challenges. For him, the difference this place has made is life-changing.
“In temporary places like guest house, I never had the stability to face my problems,” Paul explained.
“Here, I’ve managed to stop drinking. I’ve become a better person.
I couldn’t have done it alone—I feel lucky to be here. So far, so good.”
‘The Best Intervention’
The project is a joint effort between Peterborough City Council and My Housing Options Community Interest Company. Backed by a year’s funding from the government’s Rough Sleeping Initiative, the scheme offers far more than just a roof over residents’ heads.
Its goal is to provide wraparound, intensive support—helping residents move toward long-term, secure accommodation. Crucially, help is available fast.
“Our outreach team can find someone at 7am and have them in a room by 9am,” said Michael Wright from My Housing Options.
“Whether they stay a few weeks or longer, the focus is on getting them the right support, right away.”
Councillor Alison Jones, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, hailed the project as “unique” and deeply necessary.
“People here don’t just get shelter. They receive support tailored to their needs—whether that’s cooking lessons, budgeting skills, or visits from health professionals,” she said.
“We have to treat everyone as individuals. This may not be their forever home, but we want it to feel like a safe one where they can breathe, recover, and start again.”
In a city where housing insecurity remains a stubborn challenge, Off the Streets offers more than just beds—it offers dignity, structure, and a second chance.
