According to Ireland’s premier, Micheál Martin; the rap group Kneecap, which is based in Belfast, needs to “urgently clarify” the allegations that have been made about the band members’ support for Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as the murdering of Tory members of parliament.

The tape is being analysed by counter-terrorism authorities in London, together with a video clip from another event that took place in November 2024.
In the clip, a member of the band can be seen shouting “up Hamas, up Hezbollah,” which are both examples of organisations that are prohibited in the United Kingdom as terrorist organisations.
During his conversation with reporters in Dublin on Monday, Mr. Martin was questioned directly about the clips. Specifically, he stated that it was “important” for the band to make its opinion clear.
The question that he posed was, “Have they supported Hamas and Hezbollah, or do they support them? Because that would be unacceptable.”
According to my understanding, Hezbollah is the organisation that is responsible for the death of Sean Rooney, an Irish soldier who was murdered in Lebanon in the year 2022.
In addition, both Hamas and Hezbollah hold ideas that are not merely opinions; rather, they have actively participated in terrorist acts and the heinous murder of innocent people, as was shown on October 7th.

However, it is not entirely clear to me that Kneecap really support Hezbollah and Hamas to the extent that they claim to. One of the assertions that has been made is that they have provided commentary in support of both.
“I believe that they need to clarify that as soon as possible. Again, I haven’t heard in respect (of the comments about MPs), but again we’ve had some horrific events in terms of the killing of MPs in Britain, so there’s a huge responsibility on everybody to be very, very focused in terms of the protection of public representatives and the safety of public representatives, irrespective of what political views we have.
“I believe that it is essential to ensure that the right to free speech is always protected, as well as the ability to express oneself, criticise, and oppose the policies of other people. There is no question about that. On the other hand, when it comes to the lives, safety, and security of individuals, that is a different matter”.
In addition, Mr. Martin was questioned regarding the criticism that Kneecap has received in the United States for its recent performance at the famous music festival Coachella, which took place in the state of California.
During the Coachella music festival, Kneecap projected messages that read as follows: “Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people,” “It is being enabled by the US government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes,” and “F*** Israel. Free Palestine.”
Mr. Martin was asked to comment on the calls made by some of the band’s detractors seeking to prevent its members from obtaining a new visa to enter the United States in advance of future performances in the country.

“First and foremost, I believe that we require clarity,” he responded. “This has been asserted, albeit in respect to one or two public events, and I think it would benefit the entire conversation if Kneecap were to clarify urgently their position in respect of Hezbollah for example, and in respect of Hamas, and also their very clear denunciation of any violence or threat of violence against public representatives, I think that’s very, very important.”
“..In the grand scheme of things, in the arts and creative arts and so on like that, people have always been facilitated in terms of their right to criticise particular policies and so on. This has been the case” There are no problems with that.”
