Spanish police have called off the search for missing British teenager Jay Slater almost two weeks after he disappeared.

As the search entered its fourteenth day on Sunday, a spokesman for the Guardia Civil told the Telegraph that “the search has ended”.

The spokesman said the case remains open, but that search parties would no longer look for the 19-year-old from Lancashire.Mr Slater went missing in Tenerife on June 17 after calling a friend between 8.30am and 9am to say he was lost and desperately thirsty.

His phone was last traced to the Rural de Teno national park in the north of the island.For the last 13 days, the Guardia Civil has led a search operation involving helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs, but without success.

On Saturday, police asked for volunteers to join a “massive search” for the teenager, but were met by just six people.
