A bishop and several others were stabbed during a sermon at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Sydney, which was being streamed online.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in the suburb of Wakeley, and police responded to reports of the attack.
A man has been arrested and taken to an undisclosed location. Following the attack, large crowds gathered outside the church, with unverified footage posted online appearing to show some attacking the building and emergency service vehicles.
The church, which is Eastern Orthodox, confirmed the identity of the bishop, Mar Mari Emmanuel. A priest, Father Isaac, was also injured and taken to hospital.
The church called for prayers and urged the public to leave the area peacefully.
The incident comes days after six people were killed at a shopping mall in the same city, with the attacker later shot dead by a police officer.
