Sister Irmingard’s Delight: The Nun Who Tried Doner Kebab

German Nun, 92, Becomes Unlikely Internet Star After First Taste of Doner Kebab

By Cicero

A 92-year-old nun from Germany has unexpectedly become an international internet sensation after trying a doner kebab for the very first time and reacting with visible delight.

Sister Irmingard, of the Arenberg convent in Koblenz, was filmed enjoying the famous street-food dish following a religious pilgrimage alongside seven fellow nuns. The short video, which also showed her sipping from a bottle of Coca-Cola between bites, has since exploded across social media, attracting more than seven million views on Instagram alone.

In an online world often dominated by outrage and political division, the clip has struck viewers as refreshingly wholesome.

Wrapped in her traditional habit and seated calmly inside a local kebab shop, Sister Irmingard appeared both amused and quietly astonished as she sampled the towering doner for the first time. At one point in the video, she reportedly nodded approvingly while those around her burst into laughter.

The moment has prompted an avalanche of affectionate comments online, with many viewers describing the nun as “adorable”, “the internet’s grandmother” and “proof joy has no age limit”.

Germany’s doner kebab culture occupies an almost legendary place within the country’s modern identity. Introduced and popularised largely through Turkish-German communities during the late twentieth century, the doner has evolved from a fast-food staple into something approaching a national institution. From Berlin to Cologne, glowing kebab shop signs have become as much a part of German city life as bakeries and beer halls.

For many viewers, the contrast between the elderly nun’s serene presence and the enormous foil-wrapped kebab added to the charm of the clip. Social media users joked that Sister Irmingard looked as though she had “discovered heaven twice in one lifetime”.

Others were equally delighted by the Coca-Cola accompanying the meal, which became an unexpected supporting character in the viral moment. One popular comment simply read: “The kebab and Coke combo transcends generations.”

The Arenberg convent itself has reportedly reacted warmly to the attention, although neither the convent nor Sister Irmingard appear to have anticipated the scale of the online response. What began as a simple stop for food after a pilgrimage rapidly transformed into one of the internet’s most unexpectedly joyful viral moments of the week.

At a time when algorithms frequently reward confrontation and controversy, Sister Irmingard’s kebab adventure has instead offered something gentler: a reminder that small moments of curiosity, humour and shared humanity can still briefly unite millions of strangers online.

For many watching around the world, the image of a smiling 92-year-old nun discovering the pleasures of a doner kebab may have been oddly comforting.
