“All of a sudden, I’ve gained all of this debt, simply because I was employed.”
Kyle was so excited when he passed his exams and started his new job in the police. However, his excitement quickly faded when he fell into rent arrears because of the benefit trap.
He is not alone. We estimate that the benefit trap is preventing tens of thousands of young people in supported housing from taking the next step in their careers. A young person renting privately who does the same job as Kyle wouldn’t have this problem. How can that be right?
With only one month to go, we need to keep reminding the government that we won’t stop until the benefit trap is ended. We’ve written a new email for you to send your MP and let them know this issue needs fixing urgently.
Will you write to your MP and ask them to stand up for young people like Kyle ahead of November’s Budget?
Yes, I’ll write to my MP >>
The government can fix this. Just two small changes are needed to Housing Benefit which would end the benefit trap. Additionally, making these changes would save the government money – almost £13 million a year!
Kyle has this message for MPs:
“Imagine if you were in my shoes. Imagine if this was you or your child in this situation. Something needs to change. You’ve got powers to change things or at least try and make a difference.”
Will you ask your MP to make a difference and end the benefit trap this November? It takes just two minutes.
