Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Hamas’s Gaza chief, Mohammed Sinwar, has been “eliminated” in an Israeli airstrike. Speaking to the Knesset on Wednesday, Netanyahu included Sinwar in a list of Hamas leaders killed in Israeli operations, stating, “We have eliminated Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar, and Mohammed Sinwar.”
Sinwar, the younger brother of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, had taken over leadership following his brother’s assassination last year. Reports indicate that he was targeted in an Israeli airstrike on May 21, which struck a tunnel hideout beneath a hospital in Gaza. However, Israeli military sources have not yet confirmed his death, and Hamas has not issued a response regarding the claim.
Netanyahu’s announcement comes amid intensified Israeli military operations in Gaza following the collapse of a ceasefire in March. The Israeli government has stated that its goal is to dismantle Hamas’s governing and military capabilities while securing the release of hostages still held in Gaza.
The international community has reacted strongly to Israel’s ongoing offensive. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned Israel’s actions, calling them “morally unjustifiable and wholly disproportionate.” The European Union has also criticized Israel’s new aid distribution system, which bypasses the United Nations, with EU diplomat Kaja Kallas stating, “Humanitarian aid cannot be weaponized.”
As the conflict escalates, Netanyahu has vowed to continue military operations, asserting that Israel is moving toward the “complete defeat of Hamas.”
No evidence report or confirmation of this assassination has been provided so far to any news agency and Hamas has not responded to the claim in any statement it should be stated.
