In a chaotic situation, a mentally unstable Kenyan passenger named Paul Mukonyi stormed the cockpit of a British Airways Boeing 747-400 on a scheduled flight from Gatwick to Jomo Kenyatta Airport.
Mukonyi attempted to execute a route change, disconnecting the autopilot and causing a struggle between himself and First Officer Phil Watson.
The struggle was joined by Captain Hagan, who eventually removed Mukonyi from the controls. Two passengers, Henry Clarke Bynum and Gifford Murrell Shaw, helped remove Mukonyi from the cockpit, while Flight Attendants ran into the cockpit to assist.
The flight continued without further incident, and Mukonyi was transferred to authorities. The actions were recorded on amateur video by the son of English musician Bryan Ferry, both passengers on the flight. Mukonyi was later found to be in fear of being followed and attempted to kill those he deemed a threat.
