UK Royal Funeral Proceedings This Week

This weekend, the Queen’s gamekeepers will carry the oak coffin from the Balmoral Castle ballroom to a waiting hearse. Around 10:00 am, her body will leave Balmoral and make the six-hour drive to Edinburgh, which is more than 160 kilometres (100 miles) away. The casket will be delivered to the Palace of Holyrood House, the British monarch’s formal residence in the Scottish capital, and will be placed in the Throne Room.

The King will meet with the Commonwealth Secretary General at Buckingham Palace in London. Later, he will host the high commissioners from the nations in which he is the head of state in the palace’s Bow Room.

Monday 12th September 2022

King Charles will attend Westminster Hall on Monday, September 12, where both Houses of Parliament will convene to offer their condolences.
The King will fly to Edinburgh with the Queen Consort Camilla at his side. It is a component of Operation Spring Tide, the cover name for his first tour of the United Kingdom’s four countries as king.
The King and other members of the Royal Family will accompany the Queen’s coffin in a procession to St. Giles’ Cathedral in the afternoon. The public can pay their respects during the 24-hour period that the Queen’s body will be at repose at St. Giles’.

The Scottish First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, will then receive the King when he returns to Holyrood. He will next go to the Scottish Parliament with the Queen Consort to accept a Motion of Condolence. King Charles will attend a Vigil at St. Giles’ Cathedral in the evening along with other members of the Royal Family.

Tuesday 13th September

The King will visit Belfast in Northern Ireland as part of his tour of the United Kingdom’s four nations. He’ll go back to London at a later time today. The Queen’s coffin will travel from St. Giles’ Cathedral to Edinburgh Airport in the afternoon, when it will board a plane with Princess Anne and fly to RAF Northolt in London.
It will next go to Buckingham Palace, which has served as the British monarchs’ official London residence since 1837. King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be present to see the coffin arrive at the palace before it is laid to rest in the Bow Room.

September 14th, Wednesday

From Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s body will be transported to Westminster Hall.  A military procession and members of the Royal Family will follow her casket. Crowds may watch as it travels through the streets of London draped with the Royal Standard. Large television displays will also be set up specifically in the Royal Parks of the capital for the occasion.

The coffin will lie in Westminster Hall on a catafalque, a raised platform topped with the Imperial State Crown, orb, and sceptre.
Soldiers from the Royal Household’s service units will be stationed at each corner of the platform to provide security. The public will subsequently be able to enter after a brief service.

Thursday, September 15th 2022

The coffin’s trip from New Palace Yard to Westminster Abbey and finally on to Wellington Arch will be practised from 2:00 to 5:00.  The Queen’s body will lay in state in Westminster Hall for the first of four full days on this day.

The oldest section of the Palace of Westminster and the centre of the British government, the 11th-century palace, will be open for hundreds of thousands of mourners to pay their respects. Information about how people can participate will be made available later. Wales is also anticipated to welcome King Charles III.

Friday September 16th 2022

This day at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Abbey, there will be a state funeral for the Queen. To commemorate the Queen’s life and service, heads of state from around the world will be invited to join members of the Royal Family. Former prime ministers and prominent UK politicians are also expected to attend the event, which will be televised.

After then, the funeral procession will walk up Long Walk to Windsor Castle. On that day, which is a national holiday, several services and businesses are likely to be closed.
