Operation Buckthorn was a British special forces operation successfully carried out by men of the Special Boat Service on 21 December 2018 that rescued the crew of the cargo ship Grande Tema who had been taken hostage by four West African stowaways armed with crude melee weapons after the four men had hijacked the ship in the Thames Estuary.
