Major Fire Engulfs Market in Western Tehran, Cause Still Unknown

A large fire tore through a market in western Tehran on Tuesday, sending thick plumes of black smoke high into the sky and prompting an urgent response from emergency services.

According to Iranian state media, the blaze broke out in the Jannat Abad district, a busy residential and commercial neighbourhood known for its dense concentration of small shops and market stalls.

The scale of the fire was such that smoke was visible from multiple parts of the capital, alarming residents far beyond the immediate area.

Jalal Maleki, a spokesperson for the Tehran Fire Department, told state television that the fire spread rapidly after igniting, adding that its intensity made it visible across the city.

Firefighting crews were dispatched swiftly, with multiple units working to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby buildings.

Television footage broadcast by Iranian outlets showed towering columns of dark smoke blanketing the surrounding streets, while firefighters battled the blaze from several directions.

As of the latest reports, no official cause for the fire has been identified, and authorities have not confirmed whether there were any casualties or injuries.

Emergency services remained at the scene into the evening, with efforts focused on fully extinguishing the fire and assessing structural damage.

An investigation is expected to follow once the area is declared safe, as officials seek to determine how the fire started and whether safety violations played a role.
