Salt Lake City, Utah – Governor Spencer Cox confirmed Friday that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson has been identified as the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
Kirk, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, was struck in the neck during a Q&A session on campus. His death has sent shockwaves through American politics and ignited a debate over political violence in an era of viral imagery.

Identification and Arrest
Authorities say Robinson was turned in by a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office after Robinson allegedly confessed, or at least implied, involvement in the shooting.
He was taken into custody at 10pm local time on Thursday. Officials believe Robinson acted alone, though the investigation remains active.

Motive and Background
According to relatives, Robinson had become “more political in recent years” and had expressed open disdain for Kirk’s views.
Investigators confirmed Robinson is not a student at Utah Valley University. Instead, he reportedly traveled several hours from Washington County to attend the event.
Weapon and Evidence
The firearm used in the attack has been identified as a Mauser Model 98 rifle, chambered in .30-06 caliber and fitted with a scope.
Detectives recovered spent casings at the scene engraved with inflammatory messages, including “Hey fascist! Catch!” and “Bella Ciao” – the title of a famed Italian anti-fascist anthem sung to mark the fall of Mussolini’s dictatorship and the end of Nazi occupation in Europe.
Legal Proceedings
Robinson is being held on initial state charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice, an officer at the Utah County Jail confirmed.
Formal charges are expected within three days. A preliminary court hearing could take place early next week, where Robinson would appear before a judge for the first time.
Governor Cox told reporters that prosecutors would be working closely with Kirk’s family throughout the process.
Governor’s Response
At a press conference Friday, Cox described the killing as a “watershed moment in American history,” comparing it to the political assassinations of the 1960s.
“Is this the end of a dark chapter in our history or the beginning of a darker chapter?” Cox asked.
He warned that the viral spread of violent imagery online magnifies the trauma of such attacks. “We have not evolved in a way that we are capable of processing those types of violent imagery… this is not good for us,” he said.
What Comes Next
Prosecutors have until early next week to file formal charging documents, which will include more detailed evidence establishing probable cause.
“Three days for charging documents to be filed,” Cox reiterated. “We’ll have more information, more detailed information, as those charging documents are filed in preparation for a preliminary hearing.”
