Pope receives letter from Assad

The Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, has sent a private message to Pope Francis as a delegation from Damascus visiting the Vatican met on aturday with the pontiff’s two most senior diplomatic representatives. The contents of the message were not disclosed by the Vatican, which said in a statement simply that Joseph Sweid, a Syrian government minister, had met both Francis’s secretary of state, Archbishop Pietro Parolin, and foreign secretary, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti. “The delegation brought a message from President Assad for the Holy Father and outlined the position of the Syrian government,” it added. US National Reconnaissance Office Budget Annouced

The National Reconnaissance Office, which builds and operates U.S. intelligence satellites, has just released the unclassified portions of its FY 2014 Congressional Budget Justification, a detailed account of its budget request for the current year. Although more than 90% of the 534-page document (dated April 2013) was withheld from public release under the Freedom of Information Act, some substantive material was approved for public disclosure, providing a rare glimpse of agency operations, future plans and self-perceptions. UN Statement on Typhoon Haiyan

The humanitarian community’s response and commitment in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan had been phenomenal despite overwhelming challenges, John Ging, a senior humanitarian official said today at a press conference at United Nations Headquarters. Mr. Ging, Director of Operations for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said the Typhoon had left a large trail of destruction across the Philippines.  “Currently, 13 million were affected, 1.9 million displaced and 3,600 people have died”, he added. Indian PM boycotts Sri-Lankan Summit

India’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh, will boycott the Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka over alleged human rights abuses by its host. Mr Singh is expected to write to Sri Lanka’s president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, to explain why he will not be attending the summit which will put political pressure on other counties to take a stronger stance against the allegations of  war crimes committed  in the war  the countries national party and the Tamil Tigers during the 25 year conflict. Bradley Manning labelled ‘reckless’ by Military Judge
