With Nelson Mandela, seriously ill in hospital, President Obama was unable to meet him and pay his respects to the man he describes as “an inspiration to the world and a personal hero”. Government to stop utilities companies tax claims

  New legislation set out by the government confirms tax rules prevent businesses claiming capital allowances for costs met by other businesses. The legislation, which comes into immediate effect, will prevent gas and electricity distribution companies in particular from making new claims for historic costs dating back decades that have already been paid by their business customers. These claims could result in up to £900m in tax lost to the Exchequer. The Public Accounts Committee has published the 8th Report of 2013-14 on regulating consumer credit. The Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MP, Chair of the Committee of Public Accounts, said: “With money getting tighter and banks lending less, consumers are increasingly having to turn to alternative providers of credit. Pope condemns Mafia Enslavement

The Pope has accused the Italian mafia groups for “exploiting and enslaving people”, and urges those involves in Mafia related crime to repent . Pope Francis, in his weekly blessing in St Peter’s Square in Rome, said “we must pray to the Lord to make these Mafiosi convert to God”. The comments come following the beatification of  a Roman Catholic priest,  Don Giuseppe Puglisi; who was murdered by the mafia in 1993.
