EAST TIMOR NEEDS TO STRENGTHEN LEGAL SYSTEM TO AVOID CONTINUING VIOLENCE


Failure to strengthen legal institution has left East Timor trapped in a cycle of violence, says Amnesty International

As more peacekeepers arrive in East Timor under the state of emergency imposed following the shooting of President Jose Ramos-Horta, Amnesty International urges the Timorese government and the international community to act now to end the country’s endemic culture of impunity.

Amnesty International believes that yesterday’s shooting is symptomatic of the country’s most pressing challenge – the need to build strong institutions to improve security and strengthen the rule of law.
